Spirit of Christmas awards recognize charitable efforts
The Board of Selectmen Tuesday recognized members of the community who have had a positive impact.
Among the winners, the Wareham Emblem Club received an award for “fostering the spirit of Christmas for over twenty-five years through your Christmas Charities projects,” Selectmen Chair Jane Donahue said. The organization helps needy residents, nursing homes, and veterans facilities.
Also presented with an award was Community Resources Network, a volunteer organization that provides emergency assistance to residents of Wareham and surrounding towns.
Ernest “Ernie” Precourt, who will soon turn 100, was recognized for his 33 years of service as a postman in Wareham. After retirement, Precourt continued to contribute to the community by delivering holiday baskets to families in Wareham.
President of the Onset Bay Association Mary Lou Payton was recognized for her “hard work and devotion to duties for all of the festive family oriented events you sponsor, but most especially for Christmas in the Village,” Donahue said.
Anne MacRae MacCleod was handed an award for her donation of the hand-painted Mural of Carolers on the lawn of Town Hall. The Municipal Maintenance department also received an award in conjunction with MacCleod, in recognition of its contributions to the spirit of Christmas, particularly the planting and decorating of the 40-foot tall blue spruce at Town Hall.
Also taking home and award were the "Knit Wits," a knitting group that donates hats and scarves to charities and people in-need.
