Sports roundup: week of April 29
Boys Volleyball
Talk about perserverance! The Vikings rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Braintree on Tuesday, April 20 and record the program's first win since 2008. Congratulations, Boys Volleyball!
Softball
Kia Gifford gave up only four hits as the Lady Vikings defeated the Seekonk Warriors 10-4 on Wednesday, April 21. Four Wareham players contributed three hits each in the victory: Danielle Avila, Amy Westgate, Taylor Nelson, and Jessy Gadbois. Avila and Westgate also contribute three RBIs apiece.
The Lady Vikings had less success traveling to play against Fairhaven on Monday, falling 9-5. Wareham kept the game close despite some sloppy play in the field. In fact, the team scored two runs in the sixth, bringing the game to 8-5 with runners on second and third with no outs. But Fairhaven pitcher Kim Montello got out of the jam with no further damage, and the Lady Devils added a run for insurance to close out the game.
Girls Tennis
The Lady Vikings continue to improve, with straight-set victories by both Allison Covell at first singles (6-4, 6-2) and Rachel Bonfiglio at second singles (6-4, 6-0) in the team's match against Seekonk on Monday. Unfortunately, the match was suspended due to rain before the doubles matches could be completed... leaving Wareham ahead 2-1 but not victorious.
The matches will be resumed when the team visits Seekonk later in the season.
Baseball
The Vikings were shutout 5-0 by rival Fairhaven on Monday, extending their losing streak to four. Sophomore Ian Searles was on the mound for the loss. Fairhaven's pitcher Billy Lessa pitched a complete game and notched seven strikeouts.
