Sports Roundup: Week of September 30
Varsity Golf
After dropping their seventh match in a row to Fairhaven, it was a clean sweep for the Wareham Vikings Golf team in their first win of the season against Greater New Bedford Vocational Technical High School on Sept. 24.
The Viking duffers had six spots to win and they took them all, Dennis Silva, of Wareham, defeated GNB student Mason Pereira 5-4, while Brendan Heal edged out Rudy Romanowicz in a 5½-3½ win.
Maybe their first win will rev them up with some extra confidence for back-to-back-to-back matches against Dighton-Rehoboth, Apponequet and Seekonk beginning October 4.
Girls Varsity Soccer
Seemingly on the cusp of victory, Wareham High School had to settle for a 2-2 tie, after Seekonk scored on a penalty kick.
The penalty, which was disputed by Wareham coach Cindy Sylvia, was a frustrating setback for a team that has yet to win a game this season. Taylor Nelson and Nicole Johnson racked up one girl each for Wareham, while goalie Felicia Thomas made 16 saves. Next up, Wareham will face Old Rochester Regional High School on October 4.
