A sprinkle of rain doesn’t dampen Wareham patriotism

Jul 4, 2023

In the warm, wet heat of this Fourth of July morning, residents of Wareham began to assemble their most patriotic attire for the day’s celebrations — one of which was the Swifts Beach Improvement Association’s Independence Day parade.

Though it was a rainy morning, rest assured, this nearly half-century old tradition continued on.

Kathleen Norris, president of the association, said though she runs the parade now, it’s been around since she was a kid.

“It brings the community together,” Norris said.

She added the parade provides an opportunity for neighbors to meet and get to know one another, especially summer residents and those who come to Wareham on vacation.

Norris said due to the weather, this year’s turn out was lower than it typically is, adding it’s “surprising” how many people usually show up.

Parade participants lined up on Pleasant Street in front of the association’s clubhouse.

A large American flag in hand, Dominic Nardini, 14, led the way for paraders on his bike.

Participants made a short trip around the neighborhood before returning to the clubhouse for popsicles, music and quality time with family and friends.
