State Police pursue car traveling at high speeds through Wareham

Jan 17, 2016

A multi-town car chase that zoomed through Wareham early Saturday morning resulted in no arrests when police lost the car near the Whitman-Brockton town line.

State Police said local officers in Wareham, Seekonk, Taunton, Middleboro and other communities helped pursue the 2016 Ford Fusion rental car.

The vehicle had two occupants and failed to stop for police through several towns.

Police said the chase began at 2:40 a.m. on Route 44 eastbound, and that the car was rented by a Brockton woman. They were unable to determine if she was one of the occupants.

The car did not stop on Route 44 and continued into Taunton, eventually traveling onto Route 138 northbound and then onto I-495.

After the car passed through several towns, sometimes exceeding 100 miles per hour, State Police said it exited Route 25 at the Glen Charlie Road ramp in Wareham at 3:05 a.m., where police lost sight of it.

A few minutes later, State Police said the Wareham Police told them the car was headed back toward the highway.

The car re-entered Route 25 westbound, crossed the median again, traveled west in the eastbound lanes, and took the ramp to I-195. State Police ended pursuit.

At around 3:30 a.m., a trooper observed the car traveling on I-495 northbound in Wareham.

State Police authorized a fresh pursuit, but ultimately lost the car at the East Bridgewater and Whitman line, in the area of Routes 14 and 27.

State Police said they checked the home of the Brockton woman who rented the car but could not find the suspects.

They said the investigation is ongoing.
