'Streetscape' project may head to Besse Park next
The next phase of the Community and Economic Development Authority's Main Street "Streetscape" beautification project may head to Besse Park, rather than to the Wareham Fire Station as previously planned.
CEDA recently completed the first phase of the project, which updated the curbing, sidewalks, and signs on Main Street between Center Street and the Post Office.
The plan for phase two was to take the project from the area of the Post Office to Sawyer Street, across from the Wareham Fire Station.
CEDA Director Salvador Pina told the Selectmen on Tuesday that the plan is being reconsidered.
"We have a challenge with phase two. ... There are four telephone poles on one side of that road, and when the plans were done, that wasn't adequately addressed, in my opinion," Pina explained. "If we were to put those beautiful [street] lights that we have, and trees, it would be very crowded."
Adding to the uncertainty is the fact that the Wareham Fire District is considering whether and where to build a new fire station. The original "Streetscape" plans were designed with the fire department's needs in mind, Selectmen noted.
Pina's idea is to delay phase two until additional planning can be completed, and instead move ahead with the third phase -- from Center Street to Besse Park. The public will have an opportunity to weigh in, however, before CEDA moves forward with that plan.
Pina said he'd like to explore whether the utilities can be moved underground, which would take care of any crowding.
"Burying the utilities is expensive, but we don't think it'll be a huge cost because there are only four poles and five houses, and it's only one side of the street," Pina said.
The delay will also allow CEDA to learn more about Wareham Fire's plans.
It is not clear when the next phase of the project might begin.
