Students design arrangements for international flower show

While most contestants Tuesday were putting the final touches on their entries for the 10th Annual World Flower Show in Boston, students at Minot Forest Elementary School were hard at work creating their own entries for the competition.

The Annual World Flower Show, hosted by the World Association of Flower Arrangers, will be held in Boston from June 15 to June 19.

Five children from Julie Cardoso's third grade class were asked to design entries for the show's Youth Division.

Cardoso said she selected third graders Jeremy Vroom, Sarah Silva, Jasmine Simons, Carlos Rivera, and Declan McAfee to design arrangements because of their hard work throughout the school year.

“This is their time to shine,” Cardoso said. “These students were chosen because they are the unsung hereos in my class. They are creative and artistic.”

Cardoso said it was Robin Murphy, Chair of the World Association of Flower Arrangers Youth Division and Wareham Garden Club member, who asked the kids to get involved.

“It is a once in a life time opportunity for these kids and they should have a lot of fun doing it,” Murphy said.

The vases and flowers the students used for their creations were donated by the Garden Club. Garden Club member Kathleen Coyle was at the school on Tuesday to show the students the basics of flower arranging.

The children only had one day to finish their entries before Coyle brought them to the show on Wednesday, June 15. The designs will be judged alongside the entries of other children from around the world on Thursday.

The Youth Division at the World Flower Show currently has 94 entries from children all over the world including Bermuda, Zimbabwe, Great Britain, China, Pakistan, and India.

For third grader Sarah Silva, the motivation behind her design wasn't the opportunity to win. "I like planting," said the budding artist. "I like making something pretty."

In additional to Youth Division entries, the Annual World Flower Show will feature more than 500 designs in the adult classes by flower arrangers from across the globe.
