Students dodge and duck to raise money for scholarships

Wareham High School students and faculty members dodged, ducked, and dived Thursday night, raising more than $1,000 for scholarships during the 6th annual Tanya Borges Memorial Dodge Ball Tournament.

The tournament and scholarship fund are named after Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) officer Tanya Borges, who passed away after a car crash in February 2004. She was a junior at the school.

DECA is a business club that teaches students about the professional world. Tanya Borges Memorial Scholarships are given to graduating members of the club.

"I guess this is our small way in the world to keep [Borges'] spirit alive," said Cindy Sylvia, teacher at the school and DECA adviser. "It's when Wareham kids really step up to the plate for a good cause."

Sylvia said the dodge ball tournament is always very popular. "The kids have a blast," she said. Many teams draw on or tie-dye t-shirts to create their own uniforms. Students and parents alike attend to cheer everyone on.

This year, the event was on the same night as the 2nd Annual Arts Fair, held just outside the gym doors. Students floated between each event.

"With the art night tonight, it was like culture meets chaos," Sylvia said.
