Superintendent makes final reconfiguration recommendation
Next year's kindergarten, first and second grade students will likely attend Decas Elementary, while students in pre-kindergarten, third and fourth grade attend Minot Forest Elementary, according to an announcement by Wareham Public Schools Superintendent Kimberly Shaver-Hood Friday.
Shaver-Hood posted a letter to the Wareham schools website saying she would recommend this reconfiguration of elementary schools, along with the closing of the East Wareham Early Childhood Center, to the School Committee.
The reconfiguration is part of a larger budget-cutting plan.
Originally, the reconfiguration plan included pre-K through first grade students in Minot Forest Elementary and second through fourth grade students in Decas Elementary.
But at a Feb. 6 meeting of a committee convened to provide public input, Shaver-Hood said the plan might end up resembling what eventually became her recommedation on Friday.
“Minot would be pre-K, 3, 4,” Shaver-Hood said at the Feb. 6 meeting. “You might say to yourself, ‘why would we spilt pre-K and K?’ We don’t have enough classrooms in Minot to make pre-K, K, 1, and 2 work.”
In the letter on the website, Shaver-Hood said, "As we move forward with this process, we will have updates about transportation plans and before- and after-school care. Open houses for families will be scheduled at both Decas and Minot Forest. Our transition plan will be placed on the District website."
