Superintendent sets goals for upcoming year, focusing on students, district improvement

Superintendent Kimberly Shaver-Hood set her goals for the 2017 to 2018 school year, which were voted on by the School Committee on Wednesday and fall into four categories: student learning, professional practice, district improvement and family and community engagement.

The first goal, student learning, will keep Shaver-Hood striving to ensure students have access to a challenging, engaging curriculum and that the school is meeting their needs. This was weighted at 12 points after a vote from the committee members.

Next, the goal of professional practice includes supporting the Minot Forest Building Project and continuing to develop and strengthen the district’s capital plan and is weighted at 8 points.

The third goal, district improvement, also weighted at 12 points, deals with improving academic performance of all students with specific focus on student subgroups.

This goal was the most contentious. Vice-Chair Geoffrey Swett said the system of evaluating teachers is “degrading” to them.

“If I don’t see something in this goal that says we’re going to take seriously the identification of less affected teachers...I cannot support this particular goal,” Swett said.

Committee member Mary Morgan pointed out that evaluating teachers is “an extremely complex task” that isn’t fair to all teachers.

“How do you compare a teacher who is teaching honors classes to a teacher who is teaching special education by student growth?” Morgan asked.

Chair Judy Caporiccio said supervision needs to go hand-in-hand with evaluation.

“We need leaders who can supervise the teachers and understand what they’re teaching so they’re evaluated properly,” she said.

The fourth goal was family and community engagement, involving facilitating a communication system that informs and updates members of the school community, and is weighted at 8 points.

The School Committee voted 4-1 to accept the superintendent’s goals, with Swett voting against.
