Sylvia steps in as chair of School Committee

The School Committee saw a bit of a reshuffling Tuesday, with former Vice-President Clifford Sylvia taking over as chair for Rhonda Veugen, former Secretary Michael Flaherty taking over as vice-chair, and Geoffrey Swett taking over as secretary, with Veugen also remaining on the board.

Sylvia, who has served as chairman in the past, commended Veugen for her work the last two years as chair.

“I just hope that I can continue the work that she started in terms of building bridges and working together with all of the boards,” he said of Veugen. “I will do the best I can to represent Wareham Public Schools. I’ll try not to let my passion (for the town) get in the way of reason. This is a School Committee that is very exceptional.”

The committee also welcomed recently-elected member Melvin Lazarus, a longtime Wareham resident, teacher, and administrator within the district who recently retired as Dean of Students at Wareham High School last June.

“I can honestly say that it’s always been kids-first for Mr. Lazarus,” said Sylvia. “He is going to be an incredible resource for the School Committee.”
