'Tastes and Sounds of Mexico' raises money for multiple causes

Mexico made its way to Salerno's for the 8th annual "Tastes and Sounds" dinner hosted by the MA Children's Relief on Saturday, September 21.

The event raised money for Wareham's Turning Point Resource Center for the homeless and near-homeless, as well as Guyon Rescue, a New York-based organization that assists victims of Hurricane Sandy and the Oklahoma tornadoes.

Each year, MA Children's Relief organizer Sally Morrison picks a different place for attendees to "visit" for the fundraiser. This year, an 18-dish, Mexican-themed buffet was presented and guests received a program book with the evening's recipes and Mexican culinary and cultural information.

Morrison credited the two chefs, Renee Walsh and Steve Bither, as well as the Salerno family with helping pull the event together.

"Most of the food and most of the work is donated," Morrison noted.

Representatives from Turning Point were on hand for the event and said that they are trying to prepare for winter, when the chilly weather makes life harder for people living outdoors, or people who are trying to heat their homes.

"We would not be able to do this without our volunteers," said Turning Point Director Lee MacDonald.
