A six-week free tennis clinic for youth aged 9 to 13 will culminate with a tennis tournament on Monday, August 13.

Parents and friends are encouraged to join and watch the tournament which will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Wareham High School tennis courts. The rain date is Wednesday, August 15.

Clinic participants who win the competition will be awarded a new top-of-the line Prince Tennis Racquet, donated by New Jersey-based Prince Sports, Inc.

Other prizes will be donated by local Onset residents and tennis-aficionados Nicole and Mike Roberts.

The clinic was conducted by Tennis Director Joanne Byron and the Boys & Girls Club of Wareham.

"We were fortunate to have so many talented teenagers from Sippican Tennis Club and many adults from Wareham … and Wayside Racquet and Swim Club, Marlborough to teach our youngsters," said Byron. "They did a remarkable job teaching children the basic skills which led to game play," said Byron.

The following volunteers helped teach in the program.

Onset and Wareham: Steve Ford, Tim Walsh, and Doug Geist from the Wareham tennis team.

Marion: Dr. Milton Weiner, Sue Wood, Nancy Mitton, Mirya Royal, Dede Smith, and Sharon Titcomb.

Sippican Tennis Club teenagers: Oliver Sughrue, Alexa Holmes, Caroline Godfrey, Parker Converse, Oliver Kendall, Sydney Holmes.

Wayside Racquet and Swim Club, Marlborough: Jim Roberts, who has taught tennis with Byron at Wayside Racquet and Swim Club for years.

Boys & Girls Club Unit Director Barbara Sullivan and the staff at the club also supported the children. For more information, call Sullivan at 508-295-5400, or Byron at 508-295-1157.
