Thanksgiving Day festivities: football, food, fundraising
Football has become as essential to Thanksgiving Day as turkey and stuffing. So, what's the scoop this year?
Viking Coach Dan Nault said that "as long as the weather is not howling there will be a large crowd." Maybe even especially this year, as Bourne (5-5 record, 3-3 in South Coast play) looks to claim a winning record in their last game of the year.
"I would also expect to see a larger than normal Bourne contingent this year as they will see the Wareham record (1-9) and make the trip over," Nault said.
But Wareham has won 11 of the last 13 Thanksgiving Day match-ups - and 50 of the last - so despite their disappointing record this season, they have recent history on their side.
Nault said that Bourne is "a senior team with two very good running backs," who run offensive plays similar to the Apponequet and Vikings style."
For those of us who have no idea what that means, there are other things to look for at Spillane Field.
The Gridiron Club will hold a raffle with a prize of four tickets to a Patriots game versus the New York Jets. Tickets cost $10.
The club will also be selling breakfast sandwiches, pastry, muffins and drinks Thanksgiving morning at the football game. Come early and enjoy breakfast before cheering on the Vikings. All funds will support Wareham High School football.
In addition to donating toys at their traditional pre-game lunch at Lindsey’s Restaurant, the Vikings plan to collect toys at the game. Anybody who attends the game is asked to bring new, unwrapped toys to be collected at the gates. As an added incentive, each person that donates at the gate will receive a ticket for a raffle at half time. Lindsey’s General Manager, Mary Labonte will be awarding the raffle winner a $100 gift certificate to Lindsey’s.
So come to Spillane Field on Thanksgiving morning. Carry an unwrapped toy in your hands, and once you drop it, replace it with a breakfast from the Gridiron Club. Just be sure you're ready for the 10 a.m. kickoff!
