Thousands dine, play at Bourne Scallop Festival

Sep 21, 2013

Tens of thousands of people walked through the gates of the Bourne Scallop Fest last weekend to get their fill of scallops — approximately 6,000 pounds of them — during the 44th annual event.

Hosted by the nonprofit Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce, which serves Wareham, Bourne, and Sandwich, the festival was held on the banks of the Cape Cod Canal in Buzzards Bay Park and featured a midway with rides and games, continuous entertainment, and dozens of craft vendors.

"The weather is a big factor in the overall success and the fact that we had good weather… we're very pleased with that," said Marie Oliva, president and CEO of the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce. "We had some new additions from local vendors and they did very well."

Oliva said attendance was up on Friday and Saturday, though a bit of rain made for a slow morning on Sunday.

"We lucked out that the weather improved," Oliva noted.

The Chamber estimates that more than 50,000 people attended the event, many of whom came by way of the new CapeFlyer train service.

"The CapeFlyer added additional trains over the weekend, bringing hundreds of people to the Fest, which worked out magnificently," Oliva added.

Proceeds from the festival help fund the Chamber's scholarship program for four area high schools, help the Chamber donate to local food pantries and the Friends of the Bourne Council on Aging, and contribute to the operation of visitor centers in Buzzards Bay and Sagamore Beach.
