Town renovations of Hynes Field have received a boost: $91,000 in funds from the state’s Shared Streets and Spaces Grant Program.

The funds will be used to install a bus shelter for the field’s GATRA stop, street furniture, and landscaping. The state money will also go to safety improvements including a wooden guardrail, solar-powered light poles, and a public bike repair station to support non-vehicular travel.

Town Planner Ken Buckland said the project would help reduce congestion in Onset Village.

“Being on the edge of the Village center, and on the route of the fixed GATRA bus route running through Onset, Hynes field presents the perfect opportunity for a Park and Ride/Bike/Walk into the Village and the Beach,” Buckland said.

The bike repair station — one of which Buckland has used — will include supports to elevate bikes above the ground and attached tools to help cyclists complete simple repairs. He said he hopes it will encourage alternative transport.

The field’s renovations will also include a rain garden to help manage stormwater at the site and 97 parking spaces.

Most work will be completed by the town’s Municipal Maintenance department.
