Town saves money at Tremont Nail Factory

Feb 12, 2014

After the Community Preservation Committee tabled the request for $595,000 in repairs to the failing Tremont Nail Factory sprinkler system at its Feb. 4 meeting, town and fire department officials were able to resolve the issue.

Sullivan said the town received a permit to turn off the sprinkler system at no cost to the town.

"This was a great collaborative effort to save the town a lot of money," he said.

Sullivan said acting director of the Municipal Maitenance department David Menard and Wareham Fire Chief Robert McDuffy have been meeting with town officials to resolve the issue without costing the town a fortune.

Menard originally applied for Community Preservation Committee funding because he said the fire department would not allow the failing sprinkler system to be shut down. When Menard first went before the Selectmen at their Jan. 28 meeting, Selectman Peter Teitelbaum said the Fire District is the authority on decisions concerning fire safety.

The application for Community Preservation Committee funds was passed by both the Selectmen and the Finance Committee, although neither vote was unanimous and members on both boards expressed concerns with spending any more money on the property.

Sullivan said fire alarms will still be in the building, which will notify the fire department if there is a fire, and the sprinkler system can still be turned on from outside the building.
