Town searches for next Boston Post Cane award recipient
Jun 8, 2011
The town is searching for its oldest resident. Wareham's oldest citizen will be awarded the Boston Post Cane award.
The Boston Post Cane award was started in 1909 by the Boston Post. The awards were given to Selectmen and presented in a ceremony to the town's oldest living man. The custom was expanded to include a community's oldest women in 1930. Many towns in New England still carry on the tradition with the original canes awarded in 1909.
Ida Monteiro, the most recent recipient of Wareham's Boston Post Cane, passed away on April 13.
If you think you or a family member may be Wareham's oldest citizen, call the Board of Selectmen's office at 508-291-3100 ext. 3101.
