Town seeks new Director of Assessment
Town Administrator Mark Andrews is currently accepting applications for Director of Assessment, following the resignation of Sheila Scaduto.
Andrews announced Scaduto's resignation during the Board of Selectmen meeting on Tuesday, February 8. She has left in pursuit of other opportunities, he told the board.
A transitional team is in place to carry out the day-to-day operations of the Assessing Department, Andrews said this week. That team includes former director Richard Gonsalves, as well as Scaduto herself. Gonsalves took a job elsewhere last summer, but has been putting in one day per week for the Town of Wareham. Scaduto will continue working one day per week during the transitional period, Andrews said.
Scaduto was named Acting Assessor in August, following Gonsalves' resignation. She was introduced to the Board of Selectmen as Andrews' choice for permanent director last month. At that time, Selectman Cara Winslow expressed disappointment that the elected Board of Assessors, which had the power to veto Andrews' decision, was not more involved in the hiring process, though she and other Selectmen pointed out that based on Scaduto's qualifications and work, the decision would likely not be vetoed. Board of Assessors Chair Steven Curry attended the meeting in support of Scaduto.
Andrews said he'll meet with Curry later this week to discuss the hiring process.
The new director will be responsible for the operations of the Assessing Department including the town-wide appraisal system for all classes of real estate and personal property. The full-time position calls for at least five years experience working in a Massachusetts municipal assessing department, among other requirements.
