Triathletes 'Escape the Cape' at 7th annual race in Onset
In Saturday’s 7th Annual Escape the Cape Triathlon participants pushed their bodies to the limit, and loved it.
“With the sprint triathlons, it’s a lot of suffering in a short amount of time, which is awesome,” said Tucker Wetmore, 29, the first place finisher.
Escape the Cape featured a 1/3 mile swim starting at Shell Point, a 10-mile bicycle leg through Onset Village and ended with a 3.1-mile run.
Other triathlons, such as the famous Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, include longer distances, with courses reaching distances of 2.4 miles for the swim, 112 miles for the bike race and 26.2 miles for the running.
Wetmore said he preferred the short version.
“You can really race at these distances,” the Somerville resident said. “It’s not just about pacing.”
Wetmore finished the race in 48:05, possibly a new course record. He said he participates in about seven triathlons annually and got hooked on the races a few years ago.
“Tucker came in blazing fast,” said Race Director Tim Richmond. “We’ll have to check the records.”
Richmond, who owns and operates event host Max Performance, said the company was celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and described the triathlon as being on the company’s celebration tour.
With 377 participants arriving from all across New England, Richmond said the race went well.
Staging the race is difficult, he added, but many step up to volunteer.
“You’re essentially putting on three different events into one,” he said. “It takes a lot of time and energy, but it’s a labor of love.”
The second and third place overall finishers were Raymond Botelho, 43, of Falmouth and Michael Emmons, 35 of Westborough, respectively.
The first place women’s finisher was Deborah Moore-Lai, 43, of Beverly.
