Tropical Storm Irene delivers children's messages

Aug 29, 2011

Tropical Storm Irene brought lots of things with her to Wareham, including rain, high winds, and abnormally high tides. She left trees toppled, buildings damaged, and homes without power - but also delivered a few messages from some children, who each seem to have a fondness for pirates.

"I am 5. I am a pirate. Argh!" wrote Jack of Centerville, Mass.

A plastic tube containing four messages written by two Centerville children, including Jack, and two Sagamore Beach children washed up on Stoney Point Dike in Wareham sometime during Tropical Storm Irene's visit.

The messages, written in marker on bright yellow construction paper, were carefully placed between two duct-taped sheets of plastic and loaded into the container.

The notes are undated, so it's unclear how long they were floating at sea or even whether the children are children anymore!

Each child wrote about pirates, though 5-year-old Alex Palmer was curious about horses.

"I would like to know if you are a pirate. - Do you have a horse at home? Do you go horseback riding?" Alex asked, apparently with the help of an adult who has very neat handwriting, before writing his or her age at the end of the note.

Check out the photo gallery to the left for a look at the notes. Addresses are penned on each. Wareham Week & WarehamVillageSoup.com will attempt to make contact with the writers and will provide an update if any responses are received!
