A man was struck and killed by a train in East Wareham at approximately 7:15 p.m. Sunday evening.

The victim, 47-year-old Sylvester Hall of Wareham, was reportedly lying in the middle of the train tracks at the rear of Meineke Car Care at 3125 Cranberry Hwy. when he was struck by the train.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers noticed the body under the front of a Mass. Coastal passenger train, which had been traveling westbound at an apparent slow speed during the time of the impact.

The train was not carrying passengers at the time of the incident. The train appeared to be a holiday excursion train on a return run.

At 9:30 p.m., police had the accident scene cordoned off for the investigation. Shortly thereafter, the body was brought out, covered on a stretcher and loaded into what appeared to be a black SUV.

According to police, the body was removed by the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

The incident, being investigated by the Wareham Police Department and the Mass. State Police, is currently in preliminary stages.

Wareham Week will update the story as more information becomes available.
