Update: Selectmen seek re-election

Dec 17, 2013

While nomination papers for the 2014 Town Election will be not be available until Friday, Jan. 10, Selectmen Judy Whiteside and Peter Teitelbaum will run again.

Teitelbaum announced his bid for re-election on Wareham Community Television’s morning show on Monday, Dec. 16, and Whiteside did the same on Dec. 4. Both later spoke with Wareham Week.

Whiteside’s term began in April this year, filling a one-year term created by a resignation.

Whiteside said hiring Derek Sullivan as Town Administrator was one of the major accomplishments by Selectmen

Teitelbaum agreed.

Both said that working well with the School and Finance Committees and town workers were among other accomplishments.

Looking ahead to the campaign, Whiteside and Teitelbaum said they have different goals.

Whiteside has two unaccomplished goals from her first term. The first is pushing for Massachusetts to define mobile homes under the state’s affordable housing law, known as 40B.

“That would have a major impact with how the town handles the 40B bill,” said Whiteside.

Recently, Teitelbaum went to Boston to speak in favor of the measure.

Whiteside also wants to create a Red Cross regional shelter for disaster-related emergencies.

She said there’s been progress.

Teitelbaum has three goals he wants to tackle, “We are…making decent headway with transportation…businesses…and building a reputation with the state.”

As for business, Teitelbaum noted that Selectmen worked to negotiate tax increment financing that gave some businesses such as the coming Marriott hotel tax breaks — making Wareham more attractive.

Here, he credited accomplishments such as this to Town Meeting voters.

Teitelbaum also said the town has revenue issues, and the best solution to fix those issues is with better communication.

“We have to have open, honest discussions about cuts,” Teitelbaum said. “I want to improve finances, and see struggling families get a better break.”

Whiteside is also mindful of the impending budget issues, and relates the issues to when she first served as Selectman.

However, Whiteside noted the ultimate decisions will be made by Sullivan.

“We support [Sullivan] in how he chooses” how to fix the budget, Whiteside said. “He has to make tough choices.”

Teitelbaum said good relationships have formed between the Selectmen and praised board members for their efforts.

He even endorsed Whiteside, saying she had a great knowledge of the schools, and is an incredibly hard worker.

“If I get knocked off, I sure hope [voters] re-elect [Whiteside]. She’s a jewel to the town,” Teitelbaum said. “It’s a team, and she’s near the top of the batting order.”

For everyone interested in running, the last day to get nomination papers will be Feb. 10.

The last day to register to vote will be Thursday, March 13, while the election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1.
