UPDATE: Water Department employee released from hospital after crash
The driver of a Wareham Fire District Water Department truck received a citation in a Wednesday, Jan. 4 accident that sent him and a passenger to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Wareham Water Department Superintendent Michael Martin confirmed that the driver of the vehicle was treated and released from Tobey Hospital on Jan. 4.
Wareham Police Lieutenant Kevin Walsh identified the driver as Andrew Cunningham.
The passenger, identified as Robert Sylvia, suffered an injury to his jaw and was transported via ambulance to a Boston hospital on Wednesday. He was released Thursday morning, Martin said.
The driver of the Water Department vehicle was traveling on Cranberry Highway when he attempted to make a left turn into the Wareham Fire Department station in West Wareham, said Walsh. The truck turned into the path of a Cape Cod Express box truck traveling in the other direction.
The driver of the box truck, identified as Daniel Wilkinson, was not injured.
Police cited the driver of the Water Department truck, Cunningham, for failure to use care, Walsh said.
Martin said that he had not seen the findings of the accident report and thus didn’t know much about the circumstances of the incident. He said he expected to have the complete report from police on Jan. 11 (after Wareham Week went to press).
“Everyone here is extremely relieved that our fellow workers will be returning to work in the near future,” Martin said.
The driver of the vehicle will likely return to work within a week. The passenger will be out of work for at least 60 days, Martin said.
The Water Department pick-up truck was heavily damaged in the wreck. Both airbags deployed and the back window was shattered.
