Updated: Town Meeting postponed until May 3
The Board of Selectmen announced Tuesday that Town Meeting will be postponed until Monday, May 3.
"According to our Charter, the Town [Meeting] warrant needs to be posted in a newspaper 14 days in advance and that did not happen, and that's the reason why we have to delay the town business," Town Moderator Claire Smith said at the Selectmen meeting. She added that though the delay is "unfortunate," it is not uncommon. She said that various things have happened over the years that have delayed Town Meeting.
"We had a computer glitch in the communication system in the office," Town Administrator Mark Andrews said. "I take full responsibility."
Town Meeting will be opened on April 26 as originally scheduled, but no business will be conducted. A recess will be taken, and the meeting will be resumed May 3.
Smith said that she will not be making any significant changes to the spring Town Meeting, having just been elected Moderator. But a few things will be different. The Finance Committee will be on stage with the Board of Selectmen, and all town department heads will be seated in one area to answer questions and provide information relevant to warrant articles, Smith said.
Additionally, Smith suggested that people with access to a computer print a copy of the warrant to bring to Town Meeting as only 500 copies of the warrant will be available at the auditorium. She said the warrants might be used multiple times over the course of Town Meeting, due to budget constraints and printing costs.
Smith said she is working with the School Department to get portable microphones for the fall Town Meeting. She also said that she would like to work with the schools to run a consecutive Town Meeting for students, who would sit in a classroom with a monitor and "vote." The students' votes could then be compared to the actual votes.
In other business:
- Town intern Michaela Miteva and representatives from the Southeastern Massachusetts Council on Sustainability discussed the "Go Green Wareham" initiative and grant money that might be available to the town for renewable energy projects.
- The Board voted to allow a May 22 auction of properties taken by the town for non-payment of taxes. The auction will also include parcels of land of "low value" which cannot be built upon.
