With cooler weather on the way the need for flu shots is heating up, according to Wareham health officials.

To get residents vaccinated, the Wareham Board of Health and the Greater New Bedford Community Health Center have teamed up for a series of clinics.

Kathleen Minnock, the center’s Wareham site manager, said people shouldn’t wait.

“It’s better to get a shot now and in your system,” she said, explaining it can take up to two weeks for the vaccine to be effective. “Don’t wait until November.”

So far, the town and center have already hosted two clinics. One on Sept. 22 in the Multi Service Center and one in Town Hall on Sept. 20.

“We’ve had two successful clinics,” said Minnock, adding that about 60 shots were administered.

A third public flu clinic is scheduled for Oct. 4 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Wareham Middle School.

For those that can’t attend the clinic, vaccines are available at the Greater New Bedford Community Health Center daily during operating hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is located at 135 Marion Road in the Shaw’s Supermarket plaza.

Minnock said the shots are covered by all health insurance policies and the center won’t turn away someone without insurance.
