Vapor in the village
Sam Finni works overnights as a phlebotomist at Cape Cod Hospital, then heads to her Onset storefront by noon, where she sells a fragrant and flavorful indulgence.
She opened Vapor in Onset for smokers, people trying to quit smoking and to give those who do not smoke a flavorful alternative in the form of herbal vaporizers.
"If you're doing it to stop smoking you can start off at the highest [nicotine level], and wean yourself off," Finni explained. "I stopped smoking with one of these," she added.
Those with no intention of quitting can stick with the oils containing nicotine, and there are plenty of nicotine free options.
She sells kits contain a battery and a "clearomizer", which is basically a vial of oil. Just snap the two together to create something that resembles a fountain pen. Then, you just press the button to turn the battery on, take a pull and inhale the vapor.
There are also hookah sticks and electronic cigarettes available.
The United States Food and Drug Administration is expected to release regulations for e cigarettes soon, after the American Lung Association expressed concern about the effect on users' health.
Finni allows her customers to "try before they buy" so those who haven't tried a herbal vaporizer before can do so without dropping any money on it. For those familiar with the product, it gives them the opportunity to try out new flavors.
"Just come and try it out," she urges. "You won't believe it."
The initial cost of the kit is about $100, and about $10 per week after that. With cigarette prices hovering around $10 per pack, Finni says that vapor is less expensive.
"It lasts a lot longer, and it's more cost effective," she said.
Vapor carries over 50 flavor including fruity seasonal flavors including more than one variety of apple such as red delicious, green apple and caramel apple.
People who are using the product to try and quit smoking may opt for a plain case, but the kits come in a variety of glitzy options, with bedazzled cases.
"You can trick them out any way you want," Finni says.
