Veterans Council working to get Moving Wall in Wareham

The Moving Wall, a half-sized replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC, may make its way to Wareham in August of next year.

The Moving Wall has been on tour throughout the United States for more than 30 years. Creator John Devitt began the project in 1984 in an effort to share the Vietnam Memorial Wall with people who cannot make the trek to Washington, DC.

Wareham's Veterans Council gained approval from the Selectmen to submit an application and has now received a contract which must be approved by the town attorney. The initial fee for the wall is $2,500, which Chairman Bob White said he expects will be raised among members of the council.

White said the biggest decision the council faces is determining where the wall will be placed.

"There's a certain segment that wants to put it in Buzzards Bay Park and a certain segment that can't see it anywhere but Wareham," said White. "We've done nothing to facilitate it in either place."

The council will raise funds to cover the remaining $3,000 of the cost when the wall arrives in Wareham. Other costs could include renting port-a-potties, acquiring landscaping materials, purchasing plywood, renting or purchasing generators for lights, etc.

White said he hopes some of the additional costs will be donated as services by community members so that the council, which is currently working to become a federally recognized nonprofit organization, doesn't have to pay for it all.
