Wareham Firefighters rescued a dog that fell through the ice on Mill Pond off of Ames Island Road early Friday morning.

Firefighters used a rescue sled to retrieve the dog after it was seen treading water. The dog was uninjured and safely returned to its owner.

In the accompanied video, Assistant Wareham Fire Chief Patrick Haskell said firefighters arrived on the scene after receiving a call about a dog through the ice. He said two firefighters in ice rescue suits traveled about halfway across the pond with a sled to rescue the dog.

Haskell said the department trains annually for ice rescues such as this.

"No ice is safe ice, especially with the temperatures fluctuating the way they are. The ice is not safe to be out on," he added.
