Viking boys now 12-0 after win over Apponequet
Teamwork and focus has the Wareham High School varsity boys basketball team on a roll this season. After a 72-47 win over Apponequet High School on Tuesday, the Vikings are now 12-0.
Being undefeated is "always our goal," said Coach Kevin Brogioli. "But if you asked me in the beginning of the season [if the team would have a perfect season at this point], I don't know if I would have said 'yes.'"
Wareham has become the team to beat, the coach said.
"[A] 12-0 [record] is hard to do," Brogioli said. "It kind of puts a target on our back now from all the other teams."
That was clear on Tuesday, after tempers flared, leading to a technical foul against the Lakers.
Brogioli said he and the other coaches are encouraging the team to keep clear heads and focus on the task at hand.
"We worry about one game at a time," Brogioli said. "It's all about scouting for that next opponent."
It's been a team effort to keep the momentum going. The Vikings start two juniors and three seniors and have a bench full of strong players, Brogioli said.
Wareham has already qualified for the state tournament for having won 50% of the team's scheduled games. The next goal is to win the league, Brogioli said.
"This kind of competition will get us ready for the state tournament," the coach added.
The Vikings next take on Seekonk High School on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Seekonk.
