Viking Theatre Company to present 'Legally Blonde the Musical'
Don’t let the pink outfits and bubbly personality fool you, Elle Woods doesn’t take “no” for an answer in the Viking Theatre Company’s latest performance.
“Legally Blonde the Musical,” an upbeat musical comedy with an equally uplifting message of overcoming stereotypes, opens May 12, and it’s on track to be the biggest production the high school has seen in some time.
“It’s crazy compared to what we’ve done before,” said senior Kiah Heron, a cast member and the show’s costume director. “It’s like a broadway production. We wanted a challenge and this is a lot more complex than previous shows.”
The show features 12 different sets, at least 200 costume changes among all the cast members and technical assistance from Wareham Community Television.
“We’ve been really ambitious this year,” said Drama Director Carolyn Gomes Vieira. “This is the largest show we’ve done in years.”
Heather Hach wrote the musical, which follows Elle Woods’ journey from sorority girl to Harvard-educated lawyer.
In the show, Elle attends Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. Dismissed at first by her ex and fellow classmates as a ditzy blonde, Elle proves that looks can be deceiving as she defies their expectations.
“She doesn’t let anything stop her or get in her way,” said Mikaylee McEwan. “That’s something to look up to.”
A junior at Wareham High School, McEwan plays Elle, who is introduced celebrating her engagement to Warner Huntington III.
For McEwan, the role allows her to explore a character far different from herself.
“She’s so different from my personality,” said McEwan. “It’s fun, it’s a chance to become someone I’m not for awhile.”
Rehearsals started in January, which gave the cast and crew of 40 more time to prepare then usual, said Gomes Vieira.
For the show, new stage lights were installed, and Wareham Community Television donated 16 headsets with microphones for the actors to use.
An advisory committee of students picked the play, opting for the full version instead of a shortened, less complex one.
“These kids want to put me in an insane asylum because they chose the full version,” joked Gomes Vieira.
For the show to come together, Gomes Vieira said it’s been a juggling act to get all the actors together as several are athletes with games and practices to consider.
All the hard work will pay off when the curtain goes up, said Heron
“It’s really fun and funny,” said Heron. “It’s going to be a good night out. This is like pure entertainment.”
“Legally Blonde the Musical” will be performed in the Wareham High School auditorium. The show will run Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m., Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 14 at 5 p.m.
Tickets are $12 for the general public and $10 for students and are available at the door.
