Wareham opens MIAA tournament with 64-43 win over Foxboro

Vikings crush Warriors

Mar 1, 2012

The Foxboro Warriors came to Wareham sporting Mohawk haircuts, but left town on Wednesday February 29, feeling scalped after being soundly defeated by the (still) undefeated Wareham Vikings.

The 21-point victory margin accurately reflected the difference between the #1 seeded Vikings and the #17 seeded Warriors.

Wareham players showed the effects of having not played a game since February 17, and their poor shooting and passing kept the Warriors in the game through the first quarter. But Wareham proved they can play tight defense as well, and the first quarter ended with Wareham leading by a basket, 9-7.

"We knew they wanted to take away our outside shooting and they did a good job early in the game," Coach Kevin Brogioli said after the match-up.

Junior center Jeff Houde was the difference-maker starting in the second quarter. With the Warriors still making it tough for the Vikings to hit their outside shots, Houde scored 8 points on layups and short put-back shots and dominated the rebounding.

"Jeff really stepped up," said Brogioli. "I think he had his best game of the season.  [Foxboro] took away our outside shooting and he really made a difference tonight."

The Vikings led 30-18 at the half and came out in the third quarter running and continuing to play strong defense. They led 46-30 at the end of three quarters, and had the lead up to 28 points before pulling their starters late in 4th quarter to settle for the final 21-point victory.

Houde led Wareham with 18 points, followed by Darien Fernandez with 13. Foxboro was led by Tim O'Halloran with 15 points.

Wareham will next face Dighton-Rehoboth, who defeated Old Rochester 63-60, on Friday, March 2 at 7:00 pm in Wareham.  The Vikings defeated Dighton-Rehoboth in a close game on January 24 by the score 73-67.

In assessing his next opponent, Brogioli said:  "They played us very tough at home in our last game with them, and I expect they will be tough again".
