Vikings fall to Medway

Nov 4, 2013

The Wareham Vikings fell to Medway 48-0 on Friday, but it wasn't for a lack of effort.

"I'm wondering why we're playing there," said Head Coach Dan Nault, noting that the new playoff system still has some quirks to work out.

"We thought if you didn't make the playoffs you'd play against teams you're more competitive with," he explained, noting that Wareham was in over its head playing against Medway.

"We knew there was going to be problems with the system, it's just something for them to fix for next year."

Wareham went into the game knowing it was going to be a tough one.

"They had 29 seniors and we had 29 kids,"  Nault pointed out.

In addition to the new playoff rules, the team has grappled with the loss of numerous seniors in 2012, and the loss of one of the team captains for much of the season due to a broken hand.

"We're a very young team. We have all these players that are gaining experience. They're clearly getting better we just can't compete with a team like Medway at this point," Nault said.

Traditionally, football has been a sport that Wareham has played well in, if not dominated on the south coast.

"We've probably won more games than anyone other than maybe Apponequet in the Southcoast," over the years said Nault.

There's still some football left to play this year, and Wareham will face off against Foxborough at home Friday, November 8, at 7 p.m.

According to Nault, it's not going to be any easier on the boys than last week's game.

"The quarterback throws the ball very well. Their only losses are to good Division 1 and 2 teams," said Nault, adding that  Foxborough is a better team than Medway.

"It's going to be a challenge."
