Vikings fall on Opening Day
The Red Sox weren't the only ones with Opening Day this week. On Friday, April 2, the Wareham High School Varsity Baseball team opened the season at Middleboro High School. The Vikings scored a run in the first but ran into trouble as Middleboro came to the plate. Starting pitcher Mike Sullivan gave up four runs in the inning before leaving the mound, but not the game, with hand problems.
The Vikings came back with three runs in the third inning and one run in the fifth to keep the game interesting. But despite the efforts of Harry Irving, who had two RBIs, and Pat Murphy, who was 3-4 with a double and an RBI, they came up just short in the end and lost the game 7-6.
Ryan Vanderstaay took the loss, giving up just two hits but the winning run, in four innings of relief.
The Vikings play next on Tuesday at home versus Carver.
