Vikings football team head coach steps down after 2 seasons

Mar 19, 2018

Wareham Vikings football head coach Bob Lomp has stepped down from his position after two successful seasons leading the team.

Lomp will take an assistant coaching position at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Bourne. He said the main reason for his decision was because of his schedule. Lomp had been a math teacher at Apponequet Regional High School until 2015, when he stepped away to work in the private sector.

"My schedule right now suits me better for being an assistant coach," Lomp said. "Being a head coach is a 12-month position nowadays."

Lomp has coached football for 21 seasons and said he's not ready to give it up yet, but that he'll miss the Wareham Vikings.

"For the two seasons I was there, the kids were outstanding," Lomp said. "We had two successful seasons and obviously I wish them well in the future."

The year before Lomp arrived, the team posted a 4-7 record. In 2016, the team's record was 8-3 and then 9-2 in 2017. In October 2016, Lomp was named the Patriot's High School Coach of the Week and was honored along with the team with a ceremony at the high school.

Lomp is looking forward to coaching college football for the first time, as he's worked with high school players his entire career.

"It's just a different challenge," he said. "I'm excited about the opportunity to learn from the guys at Mass Maritime."

Lomp said he anticipates the Wareham Vikings will have some difficulty finding the numbers to build up the team, but that he will "always be a fan" of the team.

Lomp started his coaching career as a freshman coach for the Apponequet Lakers in 1996, followed by assistant coach for the team for four years. He had 14 straight wins with the Lakers as the head coach before coming to Wareham High School in 2016.
