Six volunteers chipped away at the renovations for the Habitat for Humanity house on 18 Minot Ave., which will be occupied by new tenants in the coming months.

"We're just doing installations of initial trimming, doors, painting, puttying," said site manager Bruce Packard. "Whatever we get done in this block of time, we'll pick up right where we left off next week."

In the small, three-bedroom house that's under 1,000 sq. ft., having even six volunteers was a full house.

Four of the volunteers were from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Nursing major Jenna Kennally, who is president of the University's Habitat for Humanity chapter, said that in just one day, the group had already painted and put in trimming in three rooms of the house.

"I love volunteering, and I love helping people," she said. Joining Habitat for Humanity was the "perfect fit" for the now-sophomore.

For Rochester-resident Rosemary Smith, working for Habitat is something she tries to do regularly.

"I work for Habitat whenever I can... I've worked for different Habitats in Florida when I'm down there in the winter," she said. "You get to try different things. On new construction, they'll let you try different tools that you've never tried before."

The previous tenants lived in the house since 2010. The property for the home was donated by resident John Decas. Local foundations, such as Charlesbank Homes, the town's Community Preservation Committee, and the Makepeace Neighborhood Fund donated funding to the project. Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School students ran the rough plumbing and gas lines for the home. More than a dozen local businesses donated supplies.

Applications for new tenants closed on Sept. 23. Executive Director Christine Lacourse said the organization is "hoping to be able to house another family by Christmas."

Oct. 1 was the first date of three scheduled days of renovations for the Mattapoissett-based chapter, Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity. Due to an overwhelming response, volunteering spots are already filled for Oct. 8 and Oct. 15. More volunteers may be needed to finish the renovations, and anyone who wishes to participate may call the office at (508) 758-4517.

The organization still needs coffee for the upcoming volunteer date, Oct. 8.
