Vote no on the override
To the Editor,
I don’t know that everyone knows an override will never pass in Wareham. I do know that, by changing the words to “Revenue Adjustment,” override advocates took a good trick of President Obama’s and made it a tricky word. Sorry, that will not fly in Wareham.
Comparing us to the town of Bourne is another failure to launch. As long as we keep the form of government we have now, anything that is as important as this is for an aging voter population needs to go to a ballot. Then it is up to the voters to educate themselves what is their best option -- voting yes or no.
I do not think elected officials should ask for donations from the public to promote their opinion. It needs to be made simple what an override will do and won’t do without threats or false statements. The $4.5 million question left much to ponder and didn't make anything clear. Neither did the group "Invest in Wareham." They are simply out of touch with reality.
We do know what override means. It is not a financial tool for elected officials. It was made by the Legislature for the towns - a limitation so you learned to live within a budget.
Towns don’t go bankrupt because the few who think they know best and can afford to have their taxes go up can still eat and have heat, it isn’t going be a problem for them.
How many of us see that is exactly what is wrong in Washington now. You cannot spend more than you take in. They are so out of touch with common folks and a life where you pay as you go, like we do. The people supporting and pushing for the override seem out of touch with reality.
We came here in 1970. We never banked or ever did much shopping in town. We did have to send four children to school in Wareham to which we volunteered to do anything needed for the schools, attended all town meetings and voting.
We also went through an earlier attempt to override Propsition 2 1/2, along with the warnings of what would happen if we did not vote for it. We did not -- so they made double sessions for the schools. This backfired. A group of parents went to the high school in late afternoon for the later session. They found fewer than 10 students in classes playing and throwing things all over. The teachers were so engrossed and angry just being there, they never noticed they had an audience of parents.
The principal was summoned to check it all out. The result was no more double sessions.
Make sure you are registered and go vote! Give others a ride. Give everyone an opportunity to say No Override.
I know almost everyone loves a good library and they always can get volunteers to keep it open with a paid employee. How long do we have to hear them complain when they had their own funding and the town's yet it was still never enough? They need to show the folks of Wareham how blessed they are to have what they do for a town this size and make it a combined effort to be great and appreciated.
