Walk for Hunger raises funds for Project Bread
Cupboards and food pantries across the state will be less bare following the 8th Annual Wareham Walk for Hunger held Sunday.
More than 100 people raised roughly $10,000 for Project Bread, which provides funding to food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Massachusetts. Church of the Good Shepherd Pastor Dan Bernier said four food pantries in Wareham benefit directly from Project Bread grants.
“This is a great community event and demonstrates the spirit of caring here in Wareham,” said Bernier. “We’re helping to feed our brothers and sisters in need.”
The 5-mile walk began and ended at the Church of the Good Shepherd and is held on the same day as Boston’s Walk Hunger each year. Bernier said the Wareham event began as a way for locals to participate and raise money without having to travel to Boston.
Among the walkers was Chuck Tolley, a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. This was Tolley and his wife’s first year walking. In past years, they pledged money to participants. They said they were walking for a friend who couldn’t participate this year.
“We want to help out the community,” said Tolley. “This is great because it’s not just our church, a lot of groups are coming together today to help out.”
Bob Powilatis, another walker, echoed that sentiment.
A member of St Patrick’s Church, Powilatis noted that the group effort goes a long way toward easing hunger in town.
“We all try to work hard together to support a common cause,” said Powilatis.
