Walmart may soon clear sewer hurdle, paving way for West Wareham construction
Construction on Walmart's new West Wareham store has been tied up in sewer tie-in issues, but town officials say a resolution is close.
“Walmart is negotiating with A.D. Makepeace about the rehabilitation at Springborn pumping station.” Water Pollution Control Director Guy Campinha told Selectmen on Tuesday. “This was the hang-up as far as Walmart tying in.”
Walmart asked the Board of Selectmen, in its role as Sewer Commissioners, to connect to the town sewer system and pump approximately 10,000 gallons of wastewater per day. The A.D. Makepeace Company took issue with the proposal.
A.D. Makepeace contends that the additional sewer capacity in the area is available because the company spent $500,000 on sewer upgrades to accommodate future development at its Rosebrook Business Park. This included an upgrade to the town's Springborn pumping station.
The Selectmen have been cautious about voting to allow Walmart to tie into the sewer system, due to concerns about potential legal issues with A.D. Makepeace.
According to Campinha, Walmart will be giving the town $50,000 to combat “inflow and infiltration” of sewer pipes by groundwater, rain water, and general run-off. There will be $100,000 held in escrow to cover any unforeseen costs.
Walmart is looking to construct and move to a 152,000-square-foot building on Tobey Road in West Wareham.
“I had hoped we’d have had this done by the end of the year,” said Selectmen Chair Steve Holmes. “We’re just waiting for a final document from Walmart.”
Holmes said he hopes to see Walmart representatives at the Selectmen's next meeting on Jan. 8.
