Wareham and State Police increase traffic safety in joint operation

The Wareham Police and the Massachusetts State Police arrested seven individuals for drunk driving and issued 105 citations in a cooperative effort to increase motor vehicle safety on Cranberry Highway on Saturday, June 30, according to a Wareham Police press release.

Wareham officers and State troopers arrested the seven individuals for operating under the influence of alcohol while conducting a sobriety checkpoint in the area of Sullivan Tire on Routes 6 and 28 from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., police said.

Three passengers were also placed in protective custody due to being intoxicated and unable to drive, police said.

The police encountered a total of 610 vehicles and made observations with regard to operators possibly operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs while conducting the checkpoint, police said.

During the traffic enforcement part of the operation, Wareham officers and State troopers conducted more than 140 stops and issued 105 citations for various motor vehicle infractions, including speeding, defective equipment, and other vehicle safety issues, police said.

State Police also arrested a man for the illegal possession of drugs, according to police.

Operators placed under arrest were to be arraigned at the Wareham Fourth District Court on Monday, July 2, 2012, police said.

Wareham Police Chief Richard Stanley commended the cooperative effort of the Massachusetts State Police and Wareham Police Department in their effort toward the goal of increasing safety on the roadways of Wareham, according to the press release.

Stanley said in a statement that the cooperative effort of the Wareham Police Department and the State Police will continue with further efforts and initiatives to keep motor vehicle safety a top priority.
