Wareham band releases new EP, 'Kings of the World'

A phone audition convinced Brooklyn-based music producer Joel Hamilton to work with Plastic Angels, a Wareham-based rock band made up of Bethany Pierce and Jeff Lawson.

The couple traveled to New York where they spent two days recording the material for their new EP “Kings of the World,” which was released on Aug. 20.

Pierce, who sings lead vocals, said working with Hamilton was a major step forward for the band, formerly known as Angry Ginger.

“He’s worked with Nora Jones, Iggy Pop and done some things with Yoko Ono,” said Pierce. “As our producer he was our guide. It was awesome having such a creative mind listening to your ideas and willing to hear you out.”

The EP contains four songs the couple had been working on since their previous album, “Love in Hell,” was released in 2013. That album garnered award nominations from organizations across New England.

Pierce said the “King of the World” title track is one of the band’s favorites.

“Weirdly enough, it’s a song we wrote quickly,” she said, adding that it’s about challenging music industry stereotypes. “It’s about women in music having a hard time getting people to accept you. As a female singer, you don’t always have men in the industry taking you seriously.”

The two Wareham natives met in July 2013 when Pierce and a friend saw a show by Lawson's previous band. Lawson has been playing guitar for decades, performing everywhere from New York to Nashville. At the time, Pierce was singing in a country cover band. When the singer of Lawson's band fell ill, Pierce stepped in for a few performances.

When people began asking them to come back as a band, not knowing that Pierce was just a fill-in, the couple realized they might have a hold of something.

Currently, Plastic Angels plays shows across the South Coast and Cape Cod with plans to perform in New York in the future.

“Kings of the World” is now streaming on Spotify and available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon. For more information on the band or upcoming shows, visit www.plasticangels.net.
