Wareham Board of Health declares Agawam Mill Pond in Wareham safe after algae bloom

Sep 7, 2018

The Wareham Board of Health has lifted a closure advisory on Agawam Mill Pond after laboratory testing confirmed a dissipating algae bloom on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

The board was first notified of the harmful cyanbacteria bloom a month prior on Aug. 5. Swimming at the pond was restricted and pet owners were advised to not let their animals drink from the water.

According to guidelines from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, water samples collected a week apart from each other must have cyanbacteria levels below 70,000 cells per milliliter before a closure advisory be lifted.

A sample collected on Aug. 27 at the state boat access point off of Ames Island Road showed cyanobacteria levels of 16,200 cells per milliliter. A subsequent sample collected at the same location on Sept. 4 showed that levels had dropped even further to 1,100 cells per milliliter with no microcystin toxin detected.

The closure advisory was officially lifted on Thursday, Sept. 6.
