Wareham church hosts exorcism specialist

At no point did anyone's head twirl around on his shoulders, but exorcisms were attempted at River of Life Church in East Wareham Saturday night.

Jay Bartlett, a minister based out of Southern California, conducts exorcisms, also known as "public deliverances." According to River of Life Pastor Bob Cordeiro, Bartlett is one of the most well-known public deliverers, accepting invitations from churches around the world with the sole purpose of casting out demons from the demon-possessed.

At Cordeiro's invitation, Bartlett came to Wareham Oct. 16.

Bartlett began the evening by leading a Christian service with prayer and communion for the 15 people who attended. Following the service, the minister used a whiteboard to write down the names of the seven most popular demons that enter people: jezebel, death, witchcraft, mind control, infirmity, ancestral idolatry, and fear.

Bartlett explained the characteristics of each of the seven and how they might manifest themselves when dwelling inside people. Bartlett then asked people to stand if they thought they were possessed by one or more of the seven demons.

Three people stood. Bartlett left his podium and went to each of the standing participants. He attempted to cast out the demon by using repetitive verse, some incense, finger snapping, and holding a Bible against the person's back.

All of the participants told Bartlett that his work was helpful and they felt much better after.

This was the second year Cordeiro invited Bartlett for the public deliverance. Cordeiro also performs exorcisms, having studied at the Denver, Colorado-based International School of Exorcism, and makes his services available through promotion on his website.
