Wareham Crossing's Braveheart Awards features Olympic gold medalist, Patriots alumni

Sep 4, 2012

Wareham Crossing's third annual Braveheart Awards, which will honor local heroes and raise money for the Special Olympics, will be held on Saturday, September 15, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the shopping center.

Special Olympic athletes will speak about their experiences with the “no limits” approach to reaching one’s dreams, and a number of local Bravehearts will be recognized for their efforts in their communities.

The event also features a myriad of family-friendly activities, including horse-drawn carriage rides, Olympic crafts, and face-painting.

Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson, New England Patriots alumni Joe Andruzzi and Steve Nelson, former Boston Celtic Chris Herren, and Boston Marathon legends Rick and Dick Hoyt will make appearances.

Samuelson, the first-ever winner of the women's Olympic marathon in 1984, will lead a short "fun run." Children and Special Olympians are invited to run with Samuelson. Modifications were made to enable all to participate.

Sign-ups for the run will occur from noon to 12:45 p.m., with the run beginning at 1 p.m. An Olympic torch will be lit following the run.

Some of the athletes will participate in sporting activities throughout the day and will pose for photos.
