Wareham Department of Natural Resources, Onset Fire Rescue rescue entangled osprey

Aug 7, 2017

Wareham Department of Natural Resource officers and Onset firefighters rescued an osprey whose talons became tangled in a wire high in a tree.

Department of Natural Resource Officer Michael McGuire made the rescue soon after 8 p.m. on Aug. 5 in firefighter gear and a safety harness borrowed from Onset Fire Rescue. Onset Firefighter Taylor Nelson followed McGuire with a blanket up the department’s ladder truck to the entangled bird as it was trapped 60 feet above the ground. The osprey was then wrapped in the blanket and safely removed from the tree, officials said.

Once the osprey was brought down, Department of Natural Resource and Wareham Police Officers worked together to untangle the rest of the line wrapped around the bird’s talons.

Officials said the bird was uninjured, but exhausted from the ordeal. It was held overnight for observation and then released Aug. 6.

According to a post on the Department of Natural Resources Facebook page, “the osprey was returned to Onset Beach where she is again soaring over Onset Bay!”

The Department of Natural Resources offered thanks to Onset Fire Rescue, the Wareham Police Department and “neighbors for calling in the osprey in distress!” after the rescue.
