Wareham Department of Natural Resources urges boat owners, residents to prepare for nor'easter

Oct 26, 2018

The Wareham Department of Natural Resources issued a warning on Facebook to all boat owners Friday to secure their vessels ahead of tonight’s approaching nor’easter as predicted wind speeds and rainfall amounts continue to climb.

“Please use this calm before the storm today to secure your boat if it is still out on the bay,” officials urged. “Local areas of flooding are possible especially on roadways so use caution if traveling.”

A nor'easter is a macro-scale extratropical cyclone that derives its name from the direction of its strongest winds which hit an eastern seaboard of the northern hemisphere.

The department noted that with the possibility for up to three inches of rain, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries may order a precautionary closure for shellfishing ahead of the storm.

Those interested in checking the status of shellfishing over the weekend should call the department’s office at 508-291-3100 ext. 3180.
