The Wareham-New Bedford Lodge of Elks #73 spread some holiday cheer on Thursday with a donation worth $2,400 to Toys for Tots.

Over the last few weeks, lodge members collected donations and then purchased toys. On Thursday, four State Police troopers were on hand to pick up the toys at the Elks lodge on Cranberry Highway in East Wareham. Massachusetts State Police and the U.S. Marine Corps coordinate the program.

“We’re very grateful,” said Bourne barracks commander Lt. James Plath.

He noted half of the toys will be given to service members at Joint Base Cape Cod.

Joanie Hackett, the lodge’s function coordinator, said in the past members donated money. This year, they opted to purchase toys.

“We’re just glad some more children will have something to open up on Christmas morning,” said Hackett.
