Wareham family recognized for fight against cancer

May 8, 2016

Members of Wareham’s Worrell family will be recognized by the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center at “The One Hundred” for their efforts in the fight against cancer on Tuesday, May 24.

Together, the Worrell family - Cindy and Geoff, and their children, Lindsay, Geoffrey and Ashely – waged a 12-year battle against Cindy’s non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Though Cindy passed away in January, the family continues to leave their mark at the Cancer Center. For the past decade, they have volunteered at, and donated to, the Mass General Marathon Team and the Run for Hope to support the Center’s mission. The family is also long-time sponsors of the Pan-Mass Challenge.

Holidays were particularly important to the Worrells. Last Halloween, the family went “reverse” trick-or-treating, distributing candy to caregivers while Cindy was an inpatient at Mass General. Every Christmas, the family gives gifts to cancer patients.

The Worrells will join 100 other honorees who will be recognized at “The One Hundred” ceremony in Boston for their efforts and were selected from a list of nearly 700 nominees. The event is an awareness and fundraising initiative that celebrates 100 community members and groups who inspire others to take action to beat cancer.

Each year, the Cancer Center, which is a well-regarded in academic and medical circles, salutes individuals, groups and organizations from across the country and world at the event.

The Worrell family’s efforts are in keeping with the Cancer Center’s commitment to eradicating cancer through research and innovation and by providing the highest quality of patient care, according to a press release.
