Wareham Free Library event is a swinging success
The Wareham Free Library was transformed into a mini-golf course on Sunday, February 20. More than 200 golfers of all ages took a swing at the obstacle-laden 18-hole course that was laid out across the entire building, and helped to raise roughly $6,000 for the library.
"Everyone who's come in said they really enjoyed it," said Wareham Free Library director Denise Medeiros.
The event was the first ever "Fore! For the Friends" fundraiser for the library. It was sponsored by the Friends of the Wareham Free Library in partnership with A.D. Makepeace. Other local businesses showed support by endorsing and decorating the fairways. The event boasted dozens of sponsors.
Library Mini Golf was responsible for the "green" makeover. The company converts libraries into putting greens for the day, providing a unique approach to fundraising.
"It gets people in [to the library] who maybe haven't gone in years," noted Russ Bolton, of Dartmouth, the owner of Library Mini Golf.
The courses take about two-and-a-half hours to set up and an hour to take down, Bolton explained. For Bolton, it's worth the effort. Since the Florida-based company launched three years ago, it has helped raise more than $300,000 in donations for libraries across the country.
The fun didn't stop at the end of the course. Golfers headed to the "19th hole" after the game, where they chowed down on hot dogs, popcorn, and chips provided by Main Street business Frankenstein's Hot Dogs and More. Face painting, raffles, and other games could also be found at the 19th hole.
