Wareham girls tennis team off to a strong start

If the first three matches of the season are any indication, the Wareham High girls tennis team is going to be tough to beat this spring.

The Lady Vikings opened with a comfortable win 5-0 over Diman Regional Voc/Tech on Tuesday, following a 3-2 win over New Bedford High School and a 4-1 match against Somerset Berkley Regional last week.

Geoff Swett, who has coached the team for 15 years, hopes to repeat the triumph of the last season, which was the first time in nearly 20 years the team entered the state tournament.

“We need to keep the practice of winning, trying to make it a tradition and that requires the team to rely on hard work,” said Swett. “Talent only goes so far and then you just have to work really hard and there are very good examples of that on this team.”

This year, six new players joined the team, while two seniors will be graduating: Ariel Lemieux and a team captain Emily Glidden, who has been playing for the school for five years and endorses the positivity within the team.

“Every time I am here, I just feel so happy because everyone is able to put a smile on their faces,” said Glidden. “Even if you are having a bad day, you are always able to come to tennis and just be happy because everyone here cares about everyone.”
